Lesson Plan 1 – “Something In An Unexpected Place”

Structure

“In, on, under, near.”

Write on the board, translate. Drill a few times for fluency. 

Idea Bank

Give ideas from the idea bank to inspire. An ant on a cake. A dress in a bottle. A  bride in a school.  Cheese near a computer mouse.  A waiter in a zoo. A watch under a plate. A sword under the refrigerator. A lipstick near a television.  Salad on the sofa.  Diamonds in a bucket .

Preparation

Elicit names of objects, in class, outside, at home, animals and places. Translate. Divide class into 2 groups. The more creative the idea, the more points awarded.  

Objective

Learn vocabulary, nouns, connecting words. Explain in pupils’ mother tongue that pupils will describe everyday objects that appear in unexpected places, like an elephant in a room – (for protection?).

Show picture.

Teacher’s warm-up

1)  Give an example, e.g. “Eggs in a bed.”

2)  Translate.

3)  Respond in pupils’ mother tongue, e.g. “So you can stay in bed while you prepare breakfast!” 

Pupils’ ideas

1) For example:  “A disco in a library.”

2) Repeat this idea in English, translate.

3) Respond to the idea in the pupils’ mother tongue, e.g. “How many of you study listening to loud music?”

Lesson Plan 2 – “Without”

Structure

Explain that “without” or “with no” can be used interchangeably. Write on the board and translate.

Teacher’s warm-up

1) Give example, e.g. “A dentist without teeth.”

2) Translate.

3) Respond in pupils’ mother tongue, e.g. “Would you believe that this dentist knows how to take care of your teeth?”

Pupils’ ideas

1) For example, “A house without doors.”

2) Repeat this idea in English, translate.

3) Respond to the idea in the pupils’ mother tongue, e.g. “How would you get into a house without doors? Climb on the roof?

Structure

“In the shape of.” Write on the board, translate. Drill a few times for fluency. 

Teacher’s warm-up

1) Give an example, e.g. “A class in the shape of a snake.”

2) Translate.

3) Respond in pupils’ mother tongue, e.g. “Perfect for naughty children, the teacher can’t see around every curve!” 

Pupils’ ideas

1) For example: “A cookie in the shape of my face.”

2) Repeat this idea in English, translate.

3) Respond to the idea in the pupils’ mother tongue: e.g. “You go into a bakery, get photographed, and automatically get cookies in the shape of your face!”

Structure

“Made of.”  Write on the board and translate. Drill a few times for fluency.  

Teacher’s warm-up

1) Give example, e.g. "A bag made of cockroaches.”

2) Translate.

3) Respond in pupils’ mother tongue, e.g.“Very good idea, no-one will want to steal your bag!”

Pupils’ ideas

1) For example, “A sofa made of cactus.”

2) Repeat this idea in English, translate.

3) Respond to the idea in the pupils’ mother tongue, e.g. “You have to tell your guests to be careful when they sit down!”

Idea Bank

Give ideas from the idea bank to inspire. A volcano made of orange juice. A car made of flowers. A poster made of cake. A picture made of bubbles. Dolls made of fire and ice. A ghost made of stone. A robot made of pizza. A sofa made of eggs. A hamburger made of pink chocolate.

Preparation

Elicit names of materials: gold, lava, silver, jelly, ice, diamonds, glass, stone, grass, cake, clouds, feathers, fire, bubbles, snow, fruit. Translate. Divide class into 2 groups. The more creative the idea, the more points awarded.

Objective

Learn vocabulary, nouns, connecting words. Explain in pupils' mother tongue that pupils will think of objects that are made of unusual materials, like the old typewriter keys made of candy. Show picture.
